Immortality is just around the corner, but for seventeen-year-old Jude Ryan it comes at too high a price.

After being sold to the City, Jude ends up in the Institute, a hybrid hospital and orphanage, where the country’s leading doctors experiment on the City’s wards to find the cure for not only diseases, but also for death.

Not all experiments go as planned. To survive being the doctors’ next mistake, Jude befriends a girl determined to escape. As Jude’s infatuation with her grows, he is manipulated into doing whatever it takes to get out from under the doctors’ scalpels. But after realizing the extent to which the Institute will go to keep its practices a secret, Jude doubts he will be any safer if he escapes. This time, if he is found, the City won’t want him as a lab rat. This time, they’ll want him dead.
